Aboutus

We are students at the University of Oslo (UiO), both on a bachelor and masters level. We are now the third group of students from the Centre for Development and Environment (SUM) at UiO that participate in this exchange program between SUM and the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in New Delhi. This exchange project was launched in 2005, mainly through the friendship that had developed between our professor Harold Wilhite and Sunita Narain during a research project Wilhite conducted in 1987. Wilhite started teaching SUM3000/4000 already keeping in mind the grand possibilities cooperation between SUM and CSE could render. So far the exchange program has been a success.

The overall aim of the SUM3000/4000 course is to give a broader perspectives on issues related to development and environment, especially how theory can be applied in practice. By being in India we are as Norwegian students given a unique insight into the south’s point of view on these interrelated topics.

In 2005 there were 15 students coming to CSE, and they were the first ones to have the honour of attending lectures at the Anil Agarwal Green College. In 2006 there were 21 students. CSE and SUM have the intention of expanding the exchange. This year we are 18, but there is a desire to increase the number of students to 30 and find a way to fund international students at SUM, taking SUM3000/4000, to also join in the exchange project.

Credits

We would like to thank everyone at Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in India and Centre for Development and Environment (SUM) in Norway, for arranging this fantastic trip, and allowing us to see the many faces of India.

This has been an amazing opportunity for us to see development and environment from a theoretical perspective learnt in Norway, to how it is done in practice here in India.

Thanks to all the lecturers, and to everyone involved in this experience.

A special thanks to Aditya Batra for all your knowledge and guidance on understanding India. To Salahuddin Saiphy, for sharing your extensive knowledge on rainwater harvesting. To Mr Baines for fixing everything, always smiling and taking good care of us.

We would also like to thank, Shams Kazi, Subhrakanta Mishra and Allan Lyngdoh for putting together the website and making it look amazing.

This web documentary project has been truly challenging, inspirational, fun, frustrating at times but in the end an unforgettable educational experience.
