What does the forest guard say?
Interview with Uday Bhan Nidar, forest guard at Sariska National Park 5th of April 2007.
By Kristin Ulsrud and Ragnhild Vognild

Which value does the forest have for you?
Forest is everything for us, since it provides us our jobs.

What do you think is the best way to protect and manage the forest?
It should be protected to attract tourism and to create a safe place for animals. In total we have 250 forest guards to search for illegal poaching. This we do in cooperation with the villagers, they tell us if they see
anything. The guards also check if the animals have enough water. The main problem is the villagers; they have cattle grazing on the land. As
the number of cattle increases they eventually go beyond the demarcated
areas for grazing. Grazing is not allowed in the park; however, we allow it
in some areas due to moral responsibility for the villagers. We are trying
to relocate the villagers.

Should everyone have the right to use the forest?
No, use of the forest should be restricted.

…then who should decide how people can use the forest?
Villagers need to source from the forest, but this must happen with limitations inside territories. They should however be included in the negotiations. It is a moral duty for us to protect the forest, and this can happen on a local level by the forest guards.
