FOOD SOVEREIGNITY

10/6/2014

We had started our day at 8 am, probably the longest day we have had since our beginning of the summer course. The lecture by Mrs. Lata was not the usual lecture, but it was rather more interactive and mostly involving with the issue of food sovereignty which was the main aim of the lecture.Food is the most political issue of the world. Maa'm began by citing examples that the food products you buy our not actually from our Country but its imported from other countries. Its interesting to note that more than 60% of our workforce is engaged in Agriculture and we import food products from other countries which is giving a very stiff competition for the local products of our Country.

Maam did a really great thing by asking us questions and getting our view point on this topic so as to see what are the views of the youth today about this issue which is global in nature.Government, and Seed Companies play a major role in the food imports despite that International market is responsible for food imports. It is the first world nation which are benefitting hugely as their crops are spread in the third world severely affecting the local farmers of the third world nations.

Lata maam also made an insight joke by saying that you guys would be more hungry by seeing the pictures of food products on the power point just before our lunch break time. Its important to know that the introduction of Green Revolution in India has brought the concept of Food Sovereignty and has drastically changed our cropping pattern which has led to the dependency of HYV seeds for the maintenance of our fields, and our original soil has been vanished.
